Of all the roles played by Martin Clunes, Doc Martin is certainly the one that stands out the most. The series became a huge international success, but for me it also has a special place: it was where I first discovered Martin and became curious about the rest of his work.
Dr Martin Ellingham is a difficult man: direct, grumpy and not very good with people, but also honest, vulnerable and often surprisingly caring. What fascinated me from the beginning was how much Martin could say without speaking — just with a look, a small change of expression or a simple gesture.
Set on the beautiful coast of Cornwall, Doc Martin mixes comedy and emotion with the everyday life of a small and rather eccentric village.
And of course, Portwenn would not be Portwenn without the rest of the cast: Louisa, Bert, Ruth, Aunt Joan, Penhale, Al, Morwenna and all the other characters who make the village feel real, imperfect, funny and very human.
